March is VIS Moot time. At the occasion of the VIS Moot, YAAP invites you to the traditional annual joint YAAP-ICC YAF Young Approaches to Arbitration conference (Friday, 24 March). Two lively sessions are waiting for you: a controversial debate on expedited proceedings and tips and tricks for a successful opening statement. Another event during the VIS Moot supported by YAAP is the Juris conference (Monday, 26 March). YAAP started into the year with a well-attended Round Table in February on damages held by FTI Consulting and wishes to announce the next Round Table, which will be an away game in Budapest (Thursday, 3 May). By then you will have recovered from the VIS Moot and be ready to join us in Budepest!

4) Review of our last YAAP Roundtable dated 28 February 2018, Vienna
The first YAAP Roundtable of the year, hosted by Patrizia Netal and designated co-chair Filip Boras, took place on 28 February 2018 and was dedicated to the topic “Introduction to damages in international dispute resolution”. Economics and financial analyst Andrew Wynn, London-based Senior Managing Director of FTI Consulting LLP, gave an excellent presentation on the basics of damages calculations. Within a short time, Andrew Wynn provided the participants with an outline of the framework for calculating damages, elaborated on the importance of determining the appropriate date of assessment, introduced the participants to different valuation methods before delving into the necessity of developing a plausible but-for scenario. Easily understandable, basic financial economic principles served as thread throughout the whole presentation, which made it easy for the legal-minded participants to get more familiar with the complex issues tackled. After engaging in vivid discussions following the presentation, more than 30 participants brought the day to a close over drinks and lively conversations – making the first 2018 YAAP Roundtable a full success.
