Dear Friends and Members,

The Vis Moot is over and its 25th anniversary was even more stunning than ever with over 3,500 participants and 357 teams from 80 countries putting Vienna for a week in the spotlight of the arbitration world. We hope you had the wonderful opportunity to experience the enthusiasm of so many young future advocates, to meet new colleagues and enjoy excellent conferences, seminars and workshops on arbitration-related topics that were organized during the Vis Moot week. Among them, the jointly organized YAAP/ICC YAF Conference on Young Approaches to Arbitration which successfully gathered more than 100 participants engaging in a hot debate on expedited proceedings vs. due process paranoia and an excellent presentation on “The ten commandments for preparation and delivery of a perfect opening statement”. A big thanks goes to the speakers of the ICC YAF/YAAP conference that contributed to this successful event!

In order to avoid any post-vis moot depression we invite you to join us for the next YAAP Roundtable in Budapest on 3 May 2018 organized with the friendly support of our Hungarian colleagues. We hope to see many of you to meet in “the floating restaurant” in one of the most beautiful European cities and to enjoy lively discussions among young practitioners from Austria and Hungary.

Yours,
Patrizia and Filip

3) Looking back: YAAP/ICC YAF Young Approaches to Arbitration Conference

The traditional Young Approaches to Arbiration conference co-organized by ICC YAF and YAAP during the Vis Moot took place on Saturday of the Moot in the beautiful Kleiner Festsaal of the University of Vienna.

The Conference kicked off with a heated debate on expedited proceedings vs. due process paranoia. Claire Pauly from Freshfields in Paris moderated this lively panel, ensuring that it does not go out of control.
Peter Riznik, (Konrad & Partners, Vienna), Lucia Raimanova (Allen & Overy, Bratislava), Ioana Knoll-Tudor (Jeantet, Paris) and Derek A. Soller (Baker McKenzie, New York) showed us that innovative solutions can mean both: New and modern rules on expedited proceedings, but that also sometimes less rules can facilitate a swift resolution of the dispute.

This year's Call for Ideas gave the chance to three fantastic students to present their innovative ideas to the audience. All three presentations raised plenty questions from the audience that probably would have continued until the evening. This shows the important role innovation plays also in arbitration.

Finally, Helmut Ortner (Wilmer Hale, London) and Thomas Garnier (McDermott, Paris) presented their ten commandments for a successful opening statement. Their experience has shown how much fun oral lawyering can be and why opening statements create moments to remember for arbitration lawyers.
