Dear Members and Friends,

YAAP has made a first step in achieving our goal of involving more young in-house lawyers in our activities. Read the report from our first in-house Round Table with Katharina Brückner (Siemens) and Martin Wolfbauer (Strabag).

Now it is Vis time! The Vis Moot gathers a mix of arbitration practitioners and students from all around the world. There is no other event which assembles so many innovative young minds at one place. It is these talented lawyers who will shape the future of arbitration.

YAAP will host its traditional conference on Saturday, 13 April, during the Vis Moot. The “Young Approaches to Arbitration” conference is co-organized with ICC YAF and will feature leading young practitioners from Basel, Belgrade, London, New York, Paris, Prague and Vienna who will engage in a lively debate about “searching for the truth” in international arbitration and a mock case showing some of the issues young practitioners may encounter when making their first steps as arbitrators. As in previous years, the traditional “Call for Ideas” is of course another highlight in the search for innovative ideas. Please join us!

Yours,
Lisa & Filip

UPCOMING: ICC-YAF-YAAP-Conference “Young Approaches to Arbitration”, Vienna, 13 April 2019

On the occasion of the Vis Moot, YAAP and ICC YAF are co-organizing what has become one of the highlights of the Moot-week: The Young Approaches to Arbitration-conference on Saturday morning. The traditional conference will break new ground this year: After an Oxford style debate on the proposition “Searching for the truth: This is what arbitration is about.” (tying in with this year’s moot problem), and the traditional ICC Call for Ideas, we will – for the first time – see a Mock Case, in which our panelists will play out various scenes from a real-life arbitration, illustrating and eventually analyzing real-life challenges. The topic “The Sorrows of the Young Arbitrator” will vividly remind many of us of what we have gone through in our very first arbitrator appointments. And it will showcase practical solutions of how to best handle those challenges. For more details read the event flyer here.

Date: Saturday, 13 April 2019, 9.00 a.m. to 2.00 p.m.
NEW Venue: Vienna Ballhaus, Berggasse 5, 1090 Vienna (www.viennaballhaus.com)
Costs: This event is free of charge!
Registration: You can register using this link or by sending an e-mail with your contact details (full name, firm/institution, email) to Mrs Denise Schwendenwein at d.schwendenwein@iccaustria.org.

REVIEW: YAAP Round Table “In-house Counsel” on 28 March 2019

Our Round Table on 28 March featured a lively discussion with two highly experienced In-house counsel, Katharina Brückner (Siemens) and Martin Wolfbauer (Strabag), on “What accounts for a good ‘arbitration experience’ and how can young lawyers contribute?”. They first described the daily challenges in-house lawyers face: giving concise answers on a broad variety of legal issues on very short notice (indeed, as we learnt, working in-house can at times be more stressful than an attorney’s job). When it comes to effective communication within the “legal team”, lawyers should always keep to the very basic wisdom that honesty and respect are key – working together as a team on equal footing. Our speakers also explained how junior lawyers may deal with unrealistic deadlines imposed by their clients and, more generally, manage expectations. And they set out how in-house lawyers may not always be too happy with long disclaimers and countless alternative paths of action: Companies do not pay for attorneys to paraphrase their problem, but to provide a solution and specific recommendation. Last, believe it or not: In-house colleagues will not be overly impressed by late night emails of their hardworking law firm-peers. A big thanks, once again, to  Katharina Brückner and Martin Wolfbauer for sharing their thoughts and insights, and for being so frank with us!
