Dear Friends and Colleagues,

We hope you had a good start into the fall season – despite the recent rise of face masks and all that comes with it. One such thing is that, however much we would have loved to meet you soon at Café Korb for finally resuming our YAAP Round Table-routine, this is not going to happen in the immediate future.

Instead, we are again going virtual:

--- Next in line, on 13 October, is our Virtual Round Table on the Must-knows on GDPR and Arbitration (see below). This is more important than ever in light of our increasingly virtual arbitration reality.

--- Also, whilst it again gets increasingly difficult to travel anywhere in real life, we want to travel with you virtually in our “YAAP Around the World”-series: In regular newsflashes featuring one jurisdiction at a time, young colleagues from around the world will give you brief updates on the most recent developments at their end. We are pleased to kick-off this series with giving the floor to our friends in Minsk, Belarus, for an update on the situation for dispute resolution (practitioners) on the ground, on 27 October 2020 (see below).

--- Meet Your YAAP-Colleagues - To keep introducing new members of the community in times of social distancing, we will start a series of blitz video-introductions. Please do send us a short (2-3 minutes) selfie video, explaining who you are and what you do, what brought you to arbitration and what you like/dislike about it. Feel free to add anything important to you – e.g. comments on the US presidential elections or on our responsibility in fighting climate change – as long as you stay within your 2-3 minutes. Looking forward!

Speaking of videos and webinars: Whilst it is great to use technology, it is even greater to meet in person. That is why we would like to invite you to join our experiment of Arbitration Walks & Talks: The idea is to meet outside in a smaller group and discuss hot topics of arbitration during a brief joint walk (save 8 October for our first Walk; see below).

So, the times are changing and that is why we are particularly interested in your views on how to best adapt: Please take one minute to fill out our brief survey on how our YAAP arbitration community can best flourish in times of the pandemic.

Last, we are happy to update you that, in November the Austrian Attorneys’ Academy (aka AWAK) will launch its first-ever AWAK-seminar on arbitration. This is the result of a joint effort by YAAP, VIAC and ArbAUT. Would be great to see you or your colleagues in the classroom (see below).

See you soon again, online or in-person,
best regards

Christian & Lisa

UPCOMING: AWAK-Seminar – Arbitration – 13-14 November 2020
We are proud that YAAP was a driving force, jointly with VIAC and ArbAUT, of the first-ever "AWAK Grundlagenseminar Schiedsverfahren". The seminar aims at familiarizing Austrian attorneys - both seasoned general practitioners as well as young arbitration lawyers - with the exotic realm of arbitral dispute resolution. One of the drivers for its launch was a desire to promote domestic arbitration and to push Vienna as an arbitral venue. The lectureres of the first edition in November 2020 include Wolfgang Hahnkamper, Philipp Peters, Katharina Plavec, Elisabeth Vanas-Metzler, Irene Welser, as well as our Lisa Beisteiner. Find the seminar details at below link.

Date: 13-14 November 2020
Venue: Fleming's Conference Hotel Vienna, Neubaugürtel 26-28, 1070 Vienna
Registration: Please register for the event at AWAK-Seminar page.

SAVE THE DATE: Virtual YAAP Round Table - White-Collar Crime & Arbitration, 23 November 2020
Oliver Loksa (Hausmaninger Kletter) and Laura Nienaber (White & Case) will analyse several aspects of how white-collar crime impacts our arbitration practice. How should parties and arbitrators react in view of criminal accusations, parallel criminal proceedings or criminal judgements? And: What is the purpose of internal investigations? Will any findings obtained in the course of an internal investigation be admissible as evidence in an ensuing arbitration?

Date: Monday, 23 November 2020, 17:30 CET
Venue: See you on Zoom – link coming soon
