Dear Members and Friends,

We hope you are wrapping up in preparation for this incoming cold front! We look forward to sunnier warmer days when we can re-launch our Arbitration Walks and Talks but for the moment, we are staying online. See below for an update on upcoming events and in particular take note of important information in relation to the Vienna Arbitration Days 2021!

Countdown - 2 Days until the first remote Vienna Arbitration Days 2021: Taking place on Friday, 12 February 2021 the Vienna Arbitration Days is the leading arbitration conference in Austria. This year's topic is “Construction Arbitration: Innovation and Constants”. The keynote speech will be delivered by Karl Pörnbacher (Hogan Lovells, Munich). Visit the conference website for further information and register here. Participation is free of charge.

  • Please note that thanks to the efforts of Anna Förstel-Cherng of YAAP the Rechtsanwaltskammer has agreed to recognise the participation in the Vienna Arbitration Days 2021 as 1 Halbtag. In order to avail of this opportunity, please send an email prior to the event to Luca Franzoi (arbaut@arbitration-austria.at), with a copy to Florian Haugeneder (florian.haugeneder@knoetzl.com). This will allow them to check your attendance during the conference and provide you with the required confirmation of attendance (Teilnahmebestätigung) after the event. If you have any queries, please do not hesitate to contact Anna Förstel-Cherng (foerstel@bindergroesswang.at).

  • Call for Emergency Moderators for the World Café: The second part of the Vienna Arbitrations Days is the World Café. The organising committee are calling for “Emergency Moderators”. If you are available, please send an email to elisabeth.vanas-metzler@viac.eu with the following information: Name, company, photo, short bio (100 to 120 words) by COB, today, Wednesday, 10 February 2021. Your name and CV will be made available on the website. Each Emergency Moderator will be allocated a topic and will be given a short briefing. We would be delighted to have many YAAP members as moderators – don’t miss this chance!

REGISTER NOW: On 18 February 2021, from 12am to 1:30pm we will host our first online lunch event organized with our Swedish colleagues at YAS. The topic is “Mind the Gap: a fresh look at procedural gaps in institutional rules”. We are delighted to have an esteemed panel of two Swedish (Henrik Fieber, Judge, Stockholm district court and independent arbitrator and Anina Liebkind, Partner, Norburg & Scherp, Stockholm) and two Austrian experts (Thomas Herbst, Senior Associate, Zeiler Floyd Zadkovich, Vienna and Elisabeth Rath, Associate, KNOETZL, Vienna). The session will be moderated by a distinguished English moderator, Duncan Speller, Partner, WilmerHale, London. The panellists will compare different institutional rules and practices as well as identifying the gaps in such rules. They will also discuss methods invoked by arbitrators to overcome these gaps. We look forward to an interesting panel discussion and there will be a possibility to “network” online afterwards. Please sign up now by sending an email to dajana.bjelovuk@freshfields.com.

SAVE THE DATE: In the run up to the 28th Willem C. Vis International Commercial Arbitration Moot ICC YAF and YAAP will host an online event on Saturday, 27 March 2021. The topic is “Young Approaches to Arbitration”. Details to follow.

Call for videos for our Meet Your YAAP-colleagues series: Please send us a short (2-3 minutes) selfie video, explaining who you are and what you do, what brought you to arbitration and what you like/dislike about it. Please feel free to add anything important to you, as long as you stay within your 2-3 minutes. Looking forward to receiving some exciting videos.

Best regards,
Christian & Niamh
