Dear Members and Friends,

We hope that this message finds you well in these extraordinary times. The Young Austrian Arbitration Practitioners stand with others in condemning Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. We stand with our Ukrainian colleagues and friends and we commit to doing whatever is possible to support them and their loved ones during this time.

If you wish to help, you may consider making a donation to one of the following charitable donations: Rotes Kreuz, Caritas, Doctors Without Boarders, Volkshilfe and Kirche in Not.

Notwithstanding these developments, we would be happy to see you in person at one of our upcoming events (see below).

UPCOMING: AWAK-Seminar – Arbitration: 11-12 March 2022
We are proud that YAAP was a driving force, jointly with VIAC and ArbAUT, of the first-ever "AWAK Grundlagenseminar Schiedsverfahren".

The seminar aims at familiarizing Austrian attorneys - both seasoned general practitioners as well as young arbitration lawyers - with the exotic realm of arbitral dispute resolution. The lecturers of the next seminar in March 2022 are Lisa Beisteiner, Wolfgang Hahnkamper, Philipp Peters, Katharina Plavec, Elisabeth Vanas-Metzler, as well as Irene Welser. Please find the seminar details under the link below.

Date: 11-12 March 2022
Venue: NH Danube City, Wagramer Straße 21, 1220 Wien
Registration: Please register for the event at the AWAK-Seminar page.

UPCOMING: YAAP Roundtable – Arbitration goes Blockchain: 16 March 2022

We continue our in-person roundtables and are excited to welcome Dirk Wiegandt (HANEFELD, Hamburg) and Johannes Landbrecht (GABRIEL Arbitration, Zürich) to a discussion on blockchain and arbitration. Dirk and Johannes will be exploring the role of arbitration in the context of blockchain technology and smart contracts.

Date: Wednesday, 16 March 2022, 7 pm
Venue: Café Korb, Brandstätte 7/9, 1010 Vienna
Registration: Please RSVP on the YAAP website

SAVE THE DATE: ICC YAF & YAAP Event: Young Approaches to Arbitration: 9 April 2022

The Vis Moot is around the corner and we cannot wait to see many of you in person in Vienna again at that occasion. As in the previous years, the oral pleadings will be held virtually. However, the traditional ICC YAF & YAAP conference “Young Approaches to Arbitration” will take place as a hybrid event. We aim to provide everyone with a forum to connect and see each other again and we encourage everyone join us in person in Vienna!

We will tackle the hot-button issue of whether arbitral tribunals have the duty to apply mandatory norms in arbitration also against the will of the parties and provide a fresh perspective on the multiple facets of the application of the CISG in international arbitration.

As in previous years, the traditional “Call for Ideas” is another highlight of this conference. Do you have an innovative idea that you would like to present in Vienna at the conference? The call for ideas is still open and you can submit your paper by 21 March 2022.

Please find enclosed a Save-the-Date flyer with further information. More details about the conference will be published soon.

Date: Saturday, 9 April 2022, from 9:30 am - 2 pm
Venue: Vienna (exact location to be announced)
Register: Please register via the ICC Austria website.

Best regards,
Ulrich & Anna
