YAAP January Newsletter and Call for Applications

We hope you have had a good start into 2023! The new year is only a month old, but we already have some exciting news to share with you:
 
NEW CO-CHAIR:
 
We are pleased to announce that Yoanna Schuch will take on the role of Co-Chair together with Ulrich Kopetzki from February 2023. Yoanna has been a YAAP Member for many years and first joined the YAAP Advisory Board in 2019. She has extensive experience as counsel in international commercial and investment treaty arbitration and currently works as a Legal Advisor and Head of Disputes at a United Nations organisation. Yoanna is taking over the Co-Chair role from Anna Förstel-Cherng, who will continue to serve as a YAAP Advisory Board Member. We would like to take this opportunity to thank Anna for her valuable contribution as Co-Chair and look forward to continue working with her in her role as YAAP Advisory Board Member. 
 
CALL FOR APPLICATIONS:
 
We are excited to share with you that we are looking to fill a YAAP Advisory Board Member position with a candidate who is motivated to actively promote YAAP's mission and support YAAP's day-to-day operations. We strongly encourage all interested YAAP Members to submit an application to become a YAAP Advisory Board Member. Your application should consist of a CV and a short cover letter highlighting the following criteria:

SAVE THE DATE: MOCK ARBITRATION ON 26 APRIL 2023 | 16:30-22:00 | PWC, DONAU-CITY-STRASSE 7, 1220 VIENNA
 
This event offers young lawyers the rare opportunity to practice their cross-examination skills in a mock arbitration side by side with experts from PwC. Top-class arbitrators will evaluate the effectiveness of the cross-examinations and provide useful tips. Two teams acting as counsel and one PwC expert will analyse the Mock Arbitration case materials and prepare their strategy for cross-examination. On the day of the “hearing", they will cross-examine the opposing team's expert and present their closing arguments to a panel of experienced arbitrators from Vienna's top arbitration law firms. After the workshop, there will be an opportunity to exchange ideas and share the day‘s experiences over drinks and canapés.

REVIEW: YAAP ROUNDTABLE – ECJ ON INVESTMENT ARBITRATIONS AFTER ACHMEA: LAST NAILS IN THE COFFIN OF INTRA-EU INVESTMENT ARBITRATIONS?
 
In November 2022, Stefan Dobrijević of the WU Wien gave a presentation at the last YAAP Roundtable of the year. He discussed the latest key ECJ judgments on intra-EU investment arbitrations in the aftermath of Achmea (PL Holdings, Komstroy and European Foods) and shared his perspective on the way forward. We enjoyed the lively debate on this topic and would like to thank Stefan for his excellent presentation!
