Dear YAAP Members and Friends,

We are only one month into the new year, but we already have some exciting news to share in this newsletter.

We are also happy to give away two free tickets for the 2nd VIAC CAN Congress on 9-10 February 2024, which YAAP is supporting as a media sponsor. If you are interested, please send an email to the YAAP Co-Chairs and, with a bit of luck, you might win a free ticket.

NEW CO-CHAIR:

We are pleased to announce that Markus Beham will take on the role of YAAP Co-Chair along with Yoanna Schuch from January 2024. Markus first joined the YAAP Advisory Board in 2021. Markus is currently an Associate Professor at the University of Passau, Germany, and an adjunct lecturer in international law in Graz and Vienna. Following a stint in practice, he continues to serve as arbitrator and advises on matters of international law and dispute resolution.

Markus is taking over the Co-Chair role from Ulrich Kopetzki, who will continue to serve as a YAAP Advisory Board Member. We would like to take this opportunity to thank Ulrich for his valuable contribution as YAAP Co-Chair and look forward to continuing to work with him in his role as YAAP Advisory Board Member.

CALL FOR YAAP ROUNDTABLE CONTRIBUTIONS:

We would like to invite all YAAP Members who are interested in being a speaker at one of our upcoming YAAP Roundtables to send an email to the YAAP Co-Chairs with a proposed topic along with a brief description of that topic. The deadline for the submission of your contributions is 23 February 2024. We look forward to many interesting contributions!

UPCOMING YAAP EVENTS:

15 February 2024: YAAP Roundtable – “Enough is Enough: Limits to the Introduction of New Claims in the course of Arbitral Proceedings”

We are happy to invite you to our first YAAP Roundtable in 2024, where Sona Tsaturyan (Schönherr, Vienna) will discuss the limits of introducing new claims in arbitration proceedings. Sona will delve into the intricacies and challenges associated with parties bringing new claims after the initial stage of the arbitration proceedings. This extends to situations where these claims are introduced during subsequent submissions or even, more significantly, during the hearing itself. Sona will shed light on the various considerations that parties should contemplate when faced with the prospect of either bringing new claims or defending against their introduction. We hope that many of you will join us to gain new practical insights into this topic and to spend a nice evening together.

Date: Thursday, 15 February 2024, 7 pm
